Outdoor Italian Dinner

This past weekend, our friends gathered to celebrate my husband's (and two others) recent promotions. explains, "Whenever an officer is promoted, he customarily holds a 'wetting-down party.' At this time the new commission is said to be 'wet down.' When several officers are promoted at the same time, they frequently have a single wetting-down party."

We went with an outdoor Italian dinner theme, and strung globe lights across the yard and had a few Italian touches. We had an Italian dinner catered, had an Italian soda bar, and played bocce!

I got the florals at a very reasonable cost (including delivery) from Sam's Club.

The caterers did a nice job setting up the tables. We had Italian bread with EVOO and balsamic on the tables prior to dinner, and guests also munched on a variety of types of bruschetta during cocktail hour.

The caterers set up on the back patio.

Dining tables were set up on the lawn, along with cocktail tables between those and the bocce court.

We kept the bar menu relatively simple, and with a large group of military men, we crushed the bar in the single evening.

I brought out lamps for the bartender, and they actually ended up looking pretty cute!
This was the Italian soda bar and instructions.

The caterers did a great job and dinner was delicious! I typed a menu so that guests knew ahead of time what would be offered (this especially helps those with food allergies such as myself)...
...which means I didn't get to have any of those^^ :-/

The guys enjoyed bocce and cornhole.

Happy hearts.

Cocktail hour and dinner.

Boys + booze + pool = midnight swimming... luckily, us ladies managed to stay dry.  Last guest (who didn't fall asleep) left just shy of 2 AM, so I'd say it was a successful wetting down! ;)

MAJOR congratulations, guys!! ;) ;)
